NEW BALANCE HISTORY

New Balance – a history in good style (and great comfort)

It started quite unusually, not with shoes, but... with orthopedic insoles. In 1906 in Boston, a man named William J. Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company, which aimed to help workers and laborers improve walking comfort. The name? Inspired by observing a chicken – seriously. Riley claimed that the balance of chicken feet was perfection he wanted to replicate in human footwear.

The brand operated locally for a long time, but the real breakthrough came in the 1960s when the first running shoe model – Trackster – was released. It was the world's first running shoe available in different widths. That was something. New Balance quickly gained the trust of athletes and then also ordinary people who just wanted comfortable everyday shoes.

In the 70s and 80s, the brand grew to cult status – without big advertising campaigns and without celebrity sponsorships. Something else worked: quality, comfort, and authenticity. To this day, a significant portion of production takes place in the USA and the UK, which is a notable distinction in the world of mass production.

In 1982, the New Balance 990 model appeared, becoming an icon among runners. It was presented as the first shoe in the brand's history to cost more than $100, but the comfort and innovative technologies it offered quickly justified the price. Other important models include the 530, which gained popularity due to its stylish design and exceptional comfort, and the 550, which became a staple in the 90s streetwear culture. The 9060 model, which debuted in 2020, gained immense popularity among retro enthusiasts and became one of the favorite shoes of younger generations.

In 2013, the New Balance Numeric (NB#) line was created – the brand's response to the growing skateboarding scene. These are shoes designed with skaters in mind, combining NB's classic style with the functionality and durability required for skateboarding. New Balance built its own team of riders, collaborated with pro skaters, and began appearing in skateparks and industry magazines. Today, NB# is a full-fledged player in the world of skateboarding footwear – and doing quite well.

Today, the New Balance brand is a mix: running shoes, sneakers, skate shoes, retro classics, and modern hybrids. They are worn by athletes, artists, sneakerheads, and those who simply value comfort. The brand has found its balance – between technology and style, between history and modernity.
